วันนี้จะเข้าเรื่องของ Joni Mitchell ละนะ ลืมแล้วยัง...
เมื่อวานเป็นการโหมโรง ตานี้มารู้จักเพลงหนึ่งของวง Matthew Southern Comfort มันเป็น single ที่ดังมากที่อังกฤษ แต่ดังปานกลางที่อเมริกา ส่วนความดังที่บ้านเรา ผมพูดแบบลำเอียงเพราะชอบเพลงนี้สุดขีด ว่ามีสูสีกับที่อังกฤษ สิงห์เพลงฝรั่งบางคนคงจำได้ มันเพราะจนไม่อยากให้จบเลยละ
เพลง Woodstock นี้เขียนขึ้นเพื่ออุทิศให้กับเทศกาลเพลงที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดของโลก จัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 15 – 18 August 1969 ที่ฟาร์มของ Max Yasgur ในรัฐ New York
The lyrics tell the story of a spiritual journey to Max Yasgur's farm, where the festival was held, and make use of sacred imagery, comparing the festival site with the Garden of Eden ("and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden"). The saga commences with the narrator's encounter of a fellow traveler ("Well, I came upon a child of God, he was walking along the road") and concludes with their arrival at their destination ("by the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong"). There is also reference to the "mutual assured destruction" ideology of the Cold War ("bombers riding shotgun in the sky..."), contrasted with the peaceful intent of the festival goers ("...turning into butterflies above our nation").

สำหรับผู้แต่งเพลงนี้คือ... แอ่น... แอ๊น... นักร้องสาว (ในตอนนั้น) จาก Canada ชื่อว่า Joni Mitchell เพลง Woodstock นี้มีหลายศิลปินนำมาร้องใหม่ แต่ที่ดังในบ้านเราที่สุดคือฉบับของ MSC
ชื่อเสียงของ JM เป็นที่ยอมรับในวงการเพลงไม่น้อยหน้าศิลปินดังคนอื่น ๆ แต่ในบ้านเรานั้นเงียบกริบ สมัยมีแต่สิ่งตีพิมพ์ บทความที่เขียนถึงเธอจะอ้างเพลงนี้ (เพลงข้างล่างนะ) ประจำซึ่งผมไม่เคยได้ยินทางวิทยุ ก็คงมีเปิดบ้างแต่พลาดไป
จนกระทั่งผีแผ่นเสียงเข้าสิง วันหนึ่งผมเห็นแผ่นเสียงที่มีเพลงนี้ของเธอรวมอยู่ด้วย ด้วยความอยากรู้อยากเห็นอันเป็นสันดานดิบที่ทำให้ผมต้องกระเป๋าแหกมาหลายต่อหลายครั้ง ก็เลยควักเงินซื้อมาฟัง ฟังแล้วก็แค่คุ้นหู
JM มีเพลงดังเข้า top 10 อยู่เพลงเดียว เพลงนี้ผมไม่เคยได้ยินทางวิทยุอย่างแน่นอน
อย่างไรก็ตาม กลับเป็นว่าผมเคยได้ยินเพลงของเธอ (เธอแต่งเพลงเอง) โดยไม่รู้ตัวมาตั้งแต่ตัวกะเปี๊ยก มันคือเพลง Circle Game จากเสียงร้องของ Agnes Chan
ฟังแล้วเพราะหูทีเดียว ตอนนั้นไม่มีใครบอก credit ของเพลงว่าใครแต่ง ผมมารู้ในเวลาต่อมาเมื่อดีเจคนหนึ่งเอาต้นฉบับที่แต่งโดย JM มาเปิดให้ฟัง
ทำนองคนละแบบไปเลย ผมมีความเห็นว่าฉบับของ Agnes Chan ดัดแปลงได้ประทับใจมาก สรุปแล้วเพราะทั้งคู่
นี่คือความทรงจำของผมเกี่ยวกับ Joni Mitchell หลายท่านผู้อ่าน อ่านมาถึงตรงนี้คงบ่นในใจว่า ‘แค่เนียะ อะไรวะ หลอกให้ตามอ่านอยู่ตั้งนาน ไม่เห็นมีอะไรเลย’ โถ... ก็ผมเคยบอกแล้วว่า เธอไม่ดังในบ้านเราเลย มันก็ไม่มีอะไรให้พูดถึงจริง ๆ อย่างไรก็ตาม ผมว่าความรู้ดั้งเดิมของผม (ก่อนยุค อตน.) เกี่ยว JM มีมากกว่านักฟังเพลงฝรั่งคนอื่น ๆ เยอะแยะนะ เกิน 90% ไม่รู้จักแม้แต่ชื่อเธอเสียด้วยซ้ำ อย่าว่าแต่เคยฟังเพลงของเธอเลย
แล้วก็ย้อนมาจบการพาดพิงถึง Jackson Browne ด้วยเพลงนี้
นานมาแล้วเคยได้ดูสารคดีเรื่องอะไรก็จำไม่ได้ ขี้เกียจค้น กล่าวถึงเรื่องศิลปินเพลงกลุ่ม west coast พวกนี้อาศัยอยู่ใกล้เคียงกันใน Laurel Canyon รัฐ California มีตอนหนึ่งกล่าวถึง JB คนที่เล่าเรื่องคือ ศิลปินตำนาน David Crosby เธอกล่าวว่าครั้งแรกที่เห็นหนุ่มน้อย JB เธอถึงกับตะลึง ‘Damn, he was a very beautiful man who played guitar beautifully’ … หน้าสวยจริง ๆ
