The song was written and recorded in late 1967 for Gainsbourg's girlfriend, Brigitte Bardot.
After a disappointing, witless date with Bardot, the next day, she "phoned and demanded as a penance" that he write, for her, "the most beautiful love song he could imagine" and that night he wrote "Je t'aime".
They recorded an arrangement of "Je t'aime" at a Paris studio in a two-hour session in a small glass booth; the engineer William Flageollet said there was "heavy petting".
However, news of the recording reached the press and Bardot's husband, German businessman Gunter Sachs, was angry and called for the single to be withdrawn.
Bardot pleaded with Gainsbourg not to release it. He complied but observed "The music is very pure. For the first time in my life, I write a love song and it's taken badly.”
In 1968, Gainsbourg and English actress Jane Birkin began a relationship when they met on the set of a film. After filming, he asked her to record the song with him. Birkin had heard the Bardot version and thought it "so hot". She said: "I only sang it because I didn't want anybody else to sing it", jealous at the thought of his sharing a recording studio with someone else.
Gainsbourg asked her to sing an octave higher than Bardot, "So you'll sound like a little boy".
Birkin said she "got a bit carried away with the heavy breathing – so much so, in fact, that I was told to calm down, which meant that at one point I stopped breathing altogether. If you listen to the record now, you can still hear that little gap.”
There was media speculation, as with the Bardot version, that they had recorded live sex, to which Gainsbourg told Birkin, "Thank goodness it wasn't, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record.”
Bardot regretted not releasing her version, and her friend Jean-Louis Remilleux persuaded her to contact Gainsbourg. They released it in 1986.
In 1984, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Birkin had just placed her straw traveling bag in the overhead compartment for her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace them. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked.
Dumas took this encounter as inspiration to create a supple black leather bag, based on an earlier design, the Haut à Courroies, which Hermès had created around 1900. Birkin initially used the bag, but changed her mind because she was carrying too many things in it: "What's the use of having a second one?" she said laughingly. "You only need one and that busts your arm; they're bloody heavy. I'm going to have an operation for tendonitis in the shoulder."
Nevertheless, since the late 1980s, the bag quickly became a symbol of wealth and exclusivity due to its high price and assumed long waiting lists. It has become much easier to purchase due to aftermarket resales.
Birkins are a popular item with handbag collectors, and were once seen as the rarest handbag in the world. The bag's value is a matter of its intentionally high price, which has led to its being described as a Veblen good.
In 2020, prices started at US$11,000 for a regular leather bag. Costs can vary widely according to the type of leather, if exotic skins are used, and if precious metals and jewels are part of the bag. A bag made of exotic skin and diamond was sold at auction by Christie's in Hong Kong for a record price of US$380,000 in May 2017. Birkins are distributed to Hermès boutiques on unpredictable schedules and in limited quantities, which creates artificial scarcity and exclusivity; however, the bags have also flooded the upscale resale market and are frequently sold in second-hand boutiques (resellers) and through social media.
In July 2015, Birkin asked Hermès to stop using her name for the crocodile version due to ethical concerns, as PETA alleged crocodile farms supplying the hide to Hermès for the manufacture of the bags crammed their animals into barren concrete pits. PETA said, "At just one year old, alligators are shot with a captive bolt gun or crudely cut into while they're still conscious and able to feel pain.” Birkin is quoted as having asked Hermès "to debaptise the Birkin Croco until better practices in line with international norms can be put in place".
