ในภาษาไทยจะมีคำผวนที่เราเคยพูดเล่น ๆ กับเพื่อนอยู่ไม่น้อย เช่น มาลองดู – มูลองดา, กินน้ำเย็น - เก็นน้ำยิน บางทีคำที่ผวนไปแล้วอาจจะไม่ได้มีความหมาย แต่ในภาษาอังกฤษ มีหลายคำผวนที่มีความหมายทั้งสองคำ อีกทั้งยังช่วยในเรื่องการฝึกอ่านให้คล่องปากอีกด้วย
คำผวนเหล่านี้ ภาษาอังกฤษมีชื่อเรียกว่า spoonerism ซึ่งเป็นการสลับพยัญชนะ สระ แทนที่กันเพื่อให้เกิดคำใหม่ขึ้นมา โดยที่ชื่อนี้มีที่มาจาก William Archibald Spooner อดีตอธิการบดีของมหาวิทยาลัยออกซ์ฟอร์ตที่เป็นผู้คิดค้นคำลักษณะนี้ขึ้นมา
